SCAD Day Graphic Design Booth
10/07/2023 – SCAD Day, Gulfstream
I had the privilege to represent SCAD’s Graphic Design department again. This time it’s for SCAD Day. SCAD Day is a weekend where juniors and seniors from high schools around the United States to come to SCAD to learn more about the school and the majors they want to be in. Graphic Design is one of SCAD’s biggest department and this year we are located in Gulstream which is the Industrial Design building. The Dean of Design decided to group all of the design department in one location instead of them being in their respected halls. This year, it’s the first time I’ve ever helped out with SCAD Day. I got the chance to talk to some seniors and juniors in high school who are interested in attending SCAD or who have applied for SCAD. Some people came in with a notebook with questions they had put down that they wanted to ask, and some just came in and chatted with us. Some parents are intimidating, and some are really nice. I had fun talking to everyone, even though I’m an introvert. I think it’s easier for me to bounce off of people than talk to people myself because I’m always a supporting character in a conversation most of the time.
Graphic Design Festival
9/22/2023 – GD Fest, Adler Hall
Graphic Design Festival is an annual event SCAD’s Graphic Design hosts in our building Adler Hall. I had the honor to represent and help out during this event again, as a SCAD student I’ve never attended GDFest in the past due to scheduling conflicts but this year I purposefully scheduled nothing on that day to attend this event. It was a shame that I didn't attend the event the past few years because of how much fun it is. For this event we have multiple workshops that students can attend, for example there are screen printing, block printing, book craft, lettering, etc. Also there is a special workshop with Graphic Design Professional Mentor and genius designer Kelli Anderson she had a hands on origami workshop. Besides the workshop students can also showcase their work in the student exhibition room, they can put up their past project and showcase it to people outside of scad since this event is also open to people outside of scad. The preparation of the event was stressful because we had to arrive early and do a dry run of the event, we found out we were missing some supplies so we had to run around to get supplies but I can confidently say that all the stress was worth it. Because how popular the screen printed bag was for the Major & Minor Fair we doubled the amount of bags we have this time for the event, this time we have 600 of them and 2 new designs, people loved the “LOOK GRDS 2023” design, we had a long line waiting for us to print that design. After this day we were all exhausted. We started preparing at 11am and we finished around 10pm including taking down and putting up the poster that was originally on the wall, because the next day we have another major event, SCAD Day.
SCAD Major & Minor Fair
9/22/2023 – SCAD Majors Minors Fair, Clark Hall
I had the honor to represent SCAD's Graphic Design department to help out during the Major & Minor Fair on September 22nd at Clark Hall. After this event, I learned I am an event ambassador for the department. This event is for freshmen who have yet to decide on their major, and they can come and ask questions about the major and get insights about the department. On this day, a lot of people came to our room wanting to be a Graphic Design minor because they have an interest in Graphic Design, but they're also interested in other majors. Some students came in and asked what they could do after they graduate with a Graphic Design degree, and we had to talk to them about what we want to do after graduating and tell them what path they can go in if they're a Graphic Design major. I had a lot of fun talking to all the freshmen through answering questions during the event. I also learned a lot about the department itself. Besides answering questions freshmen might have, we are also handing out screen-printed bags; a lot of students came into our room to get one of those bags. We had 300 bags in total and were out of the nags before the event ended. That is the first time I've ever tried to do screen printing. I've heard about it before during class but never done it myself. Our chair, Thomas Hull, explained to us how it works, and we just started doing the prints. We had two designs, "I Kern because I Care" and "Graphic Design Slays." personally, my favorite is "I Kern because I Care." kern or kerning is such a technical term we use in the Graphic Design world. It's like an inside joke we have, and it was fun explaining to some students what kerning is.
